abstract = "The aim of this paper is to present the characteristics of
automated model to delimit the permanent preservation areas (APP)
in accordance with actual environmental legislation in Brazil and
the results of its application to three municipalities (Alta
Floresta, Carlinda e Parana{\'{\i}}ta) in the northern of Mato
Grosso state. Law 12,651/2012, the New Forest Code, has considered
new variables to define the amount of APP, has to be considered
beyond the water resource, the property size and the date the area
was degraded. Given the large territory of the municipalities that
make up the Mato Grosso northern region is very important to use
automated tools to delimitation of the APPs in order to assist in
decision making regarding forest restoration activities. The model
was built on the ArcGIS platform using the buffer, union, clip,
erase and dissolve tools. All database used was produced by the
Center of Life Institute (ICV) with a 1: 25.000 scale. With this
model, it was possible to calculate the areas of conserved APPs
and the areas of degraded APP (APPD) in the three municipalities.
Alta Floresta municipality was presented the highest percentage of
degraded APPs, with 14,631 hectares, which represents 60% of all
APPs to be restored in three municipalities. The model proved to
be efficient in the generation of APPs and APPDs and can be
replicated to other municipalities. The quality of data obtained
using the automated model depends on the quality of the adopted
                         digital cartographic base.",
